The Beer Tour: Red beer in medieval cellars 700 years of brewing in Nuremberg

"What did people use to drink before there was coffee for breakfast in the morning?"

If you want an answer to that question, try our special beer-tour through subterranean Nuremberg.

Nuremberg's "Purity Law" goes back to 1303 when the Town Council ruled that only barley malt (and no other grain) could be used to brew beer. That ordinance marks the beginning of a brewing tradition with fascinating high points and deep cool cellars.

Until the second half of the 19th century, Nuremberg was Bavaria's first city of beer and the beer cooled in its vast rock cut cellars was widely exported.

The beer tour ends with a visit to an artisanal micro-brewery (Hausbrauerei Altstadthof) and a taste of the typical red beer that was brewed in Nuremberg in the Middle Ages.
